Some seeds are borne into a world of pampered caring and some are left to make it on their own, like this tree in Eden Park (Cincinnati). The knurled silhouette spins a hardscrabble tale of the Ohio River and Northern Kentucky, of times prosperous and lean, of magenta sunsets and survival. And the branches continue to rise and bud with hope for at least one more spring.

Photography is the recording of light, pure and simple. Many photographers don't understand that simple, underlying principle. Light is the key to photography...not buying the latest in photo equipment.
What we call colors are our eyes' interpretation of varying wavelengths of light. Those green leaves don't contain anything that is actually what we call the color green, they contain pigment that vibrates at varying degrees. The vibrating pigment in leaves receives white light from the sun (a combination of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet - 'ROY G. BIV') and absorbs most of those wavelengths except for green (and some yellow), which it can't absorb. So the green wavelengths are bounced from the leaves and received by our eyes (rods and cones, rods and cones...) and we call the leaves green.
You can see the varying wavelengths of light on your camera's screen or in your digital editing program if it has a color histogram. Red colors are the longest wavelengths, green are the middle ones and blue colors produce the shortest wavelengths. Because of the structural differences between film and digital camera chips we expose film images slightly differently than digital images. With film it was a matter of measuring the overall light and determining exposure pretty straight from that. With digital capture we take color much more into consideration when determing exposure. Red colors (with their longer wavelengths) often require less exposure than blue colors.
It's all in the wavelengths, it's all intrinsic to the science of photography and, quite sadly, photography has devolved to the point where cameras are making most all of the decisions. Just push the button and there you go. Wasn't that simple?
